Capstan Winch Repairs

Post by ozm29c » Wed Sep 30, 2015 4:44 am

Hi again,
Craig asked me if I could repair his GPA Capstan Winch. The 'Sprague' clutch assembly had been broken in half when the winch was disassembled. Craig had a replacement centre part which meant some time had to be spent on the clutch assembly repairs to return it to working condition. Also the worm drive shaft had badly corroded in way of the oil seal necessitating that a bronze sleeve needed to be fitted. The oil filler plug, winch shaft grease nipple and oil breather had all corroded in place, so they had to be extracted and new parts fitted. Finally the winch shaft end float had to be set up. In the past small shim washers were used but the washers had corroded beyond use. I machined a special sized thrust washer to do the job. The repairs are now complete.
Cheers
John W.
