Sealing boots : how to place them

Post by melusina53 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 8:34 am

Hello, how do you place the sealing boot?
on the inside or on the outside, and how do you fit it on the rod?

To save wear on the boot I did not use a clamp. I used two nylon "wire ties" aka "cable ties and cinched them down to where they are snug but not tight. I use wheel bearing grease and lube the drag link so that it slides in and out allowing the boot allowing the boot to remain in its normal shape and position. I get very little leakage when swimming by using this method. I believe that this will extend the life of my boot by not flexing it every time the GPA makes a turn.

Here are some more photos to show you how I did it.

First you must make sure you have a special tool that fits inside the drag link:

Mine was made out of metal, but you can also make one out of wood or plastic I think.

Put the rubber boot in hot water and let it warm up for a while.

Then put some lubricant (like soap) on the special tool and the drag link.
Now it is easy to pull the boot over the draglink. Make sure you put it on the right side (in the right direction).
I did'nt clamp my boot either, just lubricated it with lithium grease.

To finish a photo how it looks on the inside:

I hope this helps!

Melusina,

if you still have your doubts about the original, there are also new for sale.

I have also purchased a new set :-) and the tool to put them on the GPA

the shape of the new ones and the originals is slightly different, I am only the wife-translator : the husband GPA owner and his friend meccanic decide :-) what to do.
