Radiator Drain

I took pictures of my tub prior to repair but am unable to find the location of the radiator drain fitting in the tub. I remember seeing it and wondering at the time what it was. Later I figured the purpose, but now I realize the welder did not replace it during repairs. Can someone post a picture of its location? Thanks, John

Tony, Now I am really confused. The fitting that was on my tub, that I thought was the radiator drain was located down in the area of the drag link boot. Maybe it was added later. But I had assumed it was for the radiator. John

Hopefully this picture helps. The drain is just behind the middle of the steering shaft.

I don't remember what the other outlet (that Tony showed) is originally used for, but i blocked it.

Sorry Guys.... the pic I posted is for the engine block coolant drain it is on the right sid of the engine.... yes I concur on the position of the radiator drain....

Thanks Glenn, That's the one. I remember it before the repairs, but it was not there after. Hopefully I can get all these little details discovered and fixed before getting things too cluttered. John

That's great, exactly what I needed. Now, the next question. You have enlightened me on the fitting in the front tunnel, now, what is the fitting in the rear tunnel in the similar position? John

Air vent for rear axle.

You screw one end of the hose in to the breather hole of the rear axle (with the special adapter) and the other side of the hose is fixed in the hole - you suggest - with a nut (and a rubber on the outside to prevent leaking). In the top end of the hose you put a bolt for a banjo connection (= a bolt with 2 holes in it, one horizontal and one vertical).

It's better to do this before you install the chassis, because it's just under the front support of the gastank.

Glenn,

I think what John is referring to is the gas drain on the rear tunnel. There should be a small tube that connects to the drivers side (?) of the gas tank that permits draining of the gas tank (presumably for water that has condensed in the tank) in the rear. Obviously there is a hole for the axle vent but I am not sure if it has a fitting like the gas tank drain.

BINGO, That's it. Do tell, a drain for the gas tank. I would not have thought of that, but it makes sense. Thanks guys for the info, I had been looking thru my manuals and all the pictures that I have saved from the internet to figure out what it was for. Worked today on the hinges for the hood, radiator hatch, and vent. Slowly but surely it will float again. Thanks, John

Great pictures!!


One thing I noticed on your picture that my welder and I noticed that on the the top of every wheel well is a weld repair spot. It serves no obvious purpose but we believe it was used for some alignment pins that were used to align the body during assembly and then later removed. You can see it as a round spot on top of the wheel well and I found it on all four! I bet that everyone will find it on their GPA if they look closely (at least my opinion of its purpose).

There are so many holes in the GPA (even when it's restored), that it's dificult to pinpoint the right one.

As for the holes (welds) on top of the wheelwells, i also think they were used for aligning the sheetmetal.

Also when you look on the left and right rear side panel (and on the rear panel) you'll find two dimples in the sheet metal. They are used for alinging the brackets for the steering cable on the inside of the hull ... so don't put bondo in there .....

BTW Tony, aren't you missing the 2 brackets for the steering cable on the inside of your rear hull panel ?

Yes you are right. I believe it was added back after this picture was taken. I never noticed that thanks for pointing it out... I'll have to double check but my GPA is all together and functioning so go figure LOL....
